The motivational potential of working with culture studies in German language teaching at grammar schools

The diploma thesis focuses on the teaching of German-speaking countries' culture studies and their motivational potential in the teaching of German at four-year grammar schools. The theoretical part deals first with the problem of motivation in teaching. It defines terms related to motivation and discusses the negative factors operating in teaching and the role of the teacher in relation to students' motivation. This part also outlines the relationship between motivation and teaching effectiveness and describes the role of motivation in foreign language teaching. Subsequently, the thesis focuses on the German language in general and on the aims and didactic principles of foreign language teaching. This is followed by a chapter on culture studies, which first focuses on defining the concept of culture studies and different approaches to teaching it, discussing also culture studies in key documents related to the teaching of culture studies. Finally, the actual work with culture studies in foreign language teaching is presented. The practical part analyses the processing of culture studies in selected textbook sets used at four-year grammar schools. Modern Olympic Games and Their Presence in French Textbooks

The thesis deals with the significance of the modern Olympic Games for the French culture and with the use of this phenomenon in teaching French as a foreign language . It provides a brief historical summary of the Olympic games, focusing in particular on the personage of Pierre de Coubertin. It attempts to depict the role of the French language at the Olympic games, taking into account the increasing influence of the English language. The position of France towards this issue and a presumable future progress are also presented, based on available books, databases and on documents published by the International Olympic Committee and by the Olympic Museum (Lausanne). Moreover, the thesis examines the presence of this phenomenon in primary and secondary school textbooks. It also analyses its occurrence in the maturita tests. The didactic potential of the Olympic phenomenon is assessed. The thesis can thus serve as the basis for further use of this topic in French lessons. Does a "pub culture" of young adulthood have an influence to religiosity?

This thesis deals with the question whether young people find religiosity while attending pubs. More precisely, whether some sort of religious activity happens and can be observed during the time spent in pubs. The theoretical part contains known information and facts by authors who deal with related topics, which is acts of religiosity in the society, characteristics of young adulthood, as well as definition of culture and subculture throughout history and nowadays, lastly what a pub culture looks like throughout history and nowadays. The practical part of the thesis is dedicated to a qualitative research based on a half-structured interview. Further it contains characteristics of the interviewees, an analysis and an interpretation of the data acquired. All this is confronted with the theoretical information from the first part of the thesis.
